The Golden Outfield Challenge: Collect these three Diamond Heads ’15 cards featuring the members of Fenway’s famous outfield
The Golden Outfield: A Brief History
When Boston owner John Taylor personally signed Duffy Lewis for the 1910 season, he completed what many have argued is the best defensive outfield of all time. Lewis joined Tris Speaker and fellow Californian Harry Hooper to form a trio of fleet-footed, sure-handed, strong-armed warriors who anchored the Red Sox both in the field and at bat. Each set batting records during their six years together, a partnership that endured until Speaker was sold to Cleveland for the 1916 campaign. Some dubbed them The Million Dollar Outfield and they demonstrated prowess unlike any seen before or since. Grantland Rice, Ty Cobb and the Babe himself all considered the Bosox cadre the best ever. As strong as their credentials were at the plate, other units have outdistanced them offensively. But none have approached the grace and artistry they demonstrated in the pastures of Fenway.
- Harry Hooper,1909-1925. He was a master at juggling fly balls to hold runners as he moved toward the diamond, a gambit MLB outlawed
- Duffy Lewis, 1910-1921. He was the king of Duffy’s Cliff, a 10’ rampart at the base of the wall that would later become the Green Monster
- Tris Speaker, 1907-1928. His glove was known as the place where triples go to die
